CARTAGENA

Cartagena is the biggest coastal city in Costa Cálida and a major naval station of Murcia region. It is situated in 30 km from Murcia International Airport and in 112 km from Alicante Airport. Permanent population of Cartagena according to 2019 statistics was 213,943 inhabitants.

Cartagena has an important historical weight since it was the capital of Carthaginensis province during Roman Empire and one of the most important cities during the Arabic invasion of Umayyad.

Cartagena has a lot of unique landmarks such as the Roman Theatre, the second largest of the Iberian Peninsula after the one in Mérida, an abundance of Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine and Moorish remains, and a large number of Art Nouveau buildings, a result of the bourgeoisie from the early 20th century. Cartagena is now a major cruise ship destination in the Mediterranean.

Cartagena is a perfect destination for a day trip. Even though there are no proper beaches in the city due to the fact that the port occupies the majority of its coastal area, you can go out of the city to the nearest sandy beaches of Mazzaron and La Manga.

Cartagena also holds lots of different festivals including various music and other local cultural fiestas. Cartagena is a students’s city and accepts large number of international students at Cartagena Technical University.

Cartagena might be a perfect location for those you are used to living in cities rather than small coastal villages and are inspired by beautiful architecture and historic heritage, having access to stunning beaches within several minutes by car.
